Lyrics vs. technology, take 2

I needed something to rhyme with "on my own," or possibly "alone." Hmmm. How about "waiting by the phone"?

Not bad, not bad.

Oh, wait. Nobody waits by the phone anymore. Cell phones have destroyed that cliche forever. I've already lost one decent song to advances in telecommunications; no point in making another one obsolete before I've even finished it.

Back to the drawing board.

Or the tablet. Whatever.

I think the phrase "waiting by the phone" might just be even more powerful than it was before cell phones. Now, it implies that not only are you waiting for the phone to ring, you're not going out and doing other things, even though you could totally do both at the same time.

Technology changes, sure, and terminology goes in and out of fashion, but I think you can use that to your advantage in certain circumstances.

Like a dog without a bone
An actor out on loan
Some tea without a scone
Or a knife you cannot hone
A ghost who cannot moan
A saint who isn't Joan
If you can't make good cornpone
Outside your comfort zone
Some muscles without tone
A horse that's white, not roan
