Momentum

A new study shows that long-term antiviral treatment can help ME/CFS patients.

A new XMRV diagnostic test should be available by July 1.

Is it my imagination, or does it seem like things are actually happening?

Always cool to read about medical progress. I live in SF, which is biotech central, and I figure that medical treatments will start to advance the same way computer tech has, maybe not as fast, but equally relentless. As Lerner says, data mining is key -- and it's still in its infancy!

Yes, that would ROCK! How can I follow your blog? I don't see a link..

Jeff: A little off the subject, but my understanding is that data mining = the beginning of hypothesis testing, not the end. After you find stuff that looks promising, you test it for real.

I hope you're right about medical progress, though. It seems brutally slow even for diseases that get their fair share of attention.

Judy: Thanks for asking! I wasn't aware that you could put a follow link on a blog. I'll look into that. In the meantime, there's another way to follow people on Blogger.

1. Sign in and go to the dashboard.
2. Go to Reading List
3. Click the ADD button
4. Enter http://cinderbridge.blogspot.com
5. Click NEXT
6. Select whether you want to follow publicly or anonymously
7. Click FOLLOW
8. You're done. :)

Sorry to make it more complicated than clicking a button. I'll try to figure out how to make this easier when I'm not at work. :)

You're right, data mining is looking for correlations. BUT, as computers accelerate, it becomes easier to find correlations, because the amount of data you can look at today is just staggering -- although still a teensy fraction of what a single human body holds!
